6. Integration of operating systems and administrative functions

While the new bank began operating one year ahead of schedule, it was difficult to accelerate the timing of the integration of core banking systems. During its first year, the new bank used the systems of both former banks, installing relay programs to connect the two systems while building new systems and programs based on those used by the former Sumitomo Bank. The new core banking system was introduced deliberately in seven stages, starting in April 2002.

Integration was carried out for a broad range of operation systems and administration functions, including information and communications systems, passbook and cash card designs, branch names, office equipment and supplies, and terminology. All these tasks were executed based on the policy of pursuing best practices for integration.
