Chapter 5
The Path for Our Future

1. New group management

On April 1, 2019, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG) and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) inaugurated a new leadership team. Major changes of the membership were: Koichi Miyata relinquishing his position as Chairman of the Board of SMFG while remaining Chairman of the Board of SMBC to serve in that role full-time; Takeshi Kunibe resigning as President and Group CEO and becoming Chairman of the Board of SMFG; and Jun Ohta, who was formerly Deputy President, Group CFO and Group CSO (concurrently serving as Deputy President at SMBC) becoming President and Group CEO. In his inaugural address, Ohta emphasized the crucial importance of looking forward and being proactive, as well as maximizing the Group’s collective strengths. He also called for all officers and employees to “Break the mold,” or break free from conventional ways of thinking.
