2. Relocation of SMBC Head Office

In July 2010, the new SMBC Head Office Building was completed in Tokyo. In October 2010, the previous head office functions housed in the former head office moved into the new Head Office Building and the North Building. This consolidated functions after they had been separately located in Tokyo’s Hibiya and Otemachi areas over years since the merger.

In April 2009, prior to the relocation of the head office, SMBC formed the Head Office Relocation project team to promote new business flows. Major initiatives included business flows with a paperless, cabinet-less office environment and introducing an open workspace. In conjunction with the project, SMBC called for proposals to increase efficiency and reduce costs for operations of head office departments and picked up many proposals from those submitted by employees.
